Get off to a good start, “Attend today, achieve for a lifetime!”

Going to school is important to me because...

I contribute a lot to my class!

Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom, creating commotion and slowing down instruction.

¡Yo contribuyo mucho a mi clase! Contribuyo...

Scholastic is a great way to increase your child's home library.  It also increases our classroom library.  When you purchase books, we earn points and other books can be purchased for our class library!  Also twice a year Scholastic Fair comes to our school.  It helps us earn money to purchase more books to our school library.  You may also wish to donate books to our classroom library.

Homework

Welcome to Mrs. Korsten's Class.

For homework this year, we are requesting that parents have their children read for 20 minutes each night.  There will be no required turning in a reading log or parent signature.  A spelling list will be sent home once a week and a spelling test will be given at the end of the week.  There will be opportunities for spelling practice in class.  But practicing at home is encouraged.  As always anything worked on at home that is being done in class is encouraged.

For math, please practice math facts within 20.  This will help so much in their addition and subtraction.  Practice the concept of 100's, 10's and 1's.  Use money as a practical manipulative.  This is really important this year.  Thanks for helping your child's learning.

Looking forward to a great year!  If you need to communicate with me, email is the best way!  Welcome to 2017-2018 at Almond Grove!  We're glad you're here.

10 TOP WAYS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN 2ND GRADE

1. Read together daily!!!! Children who read at home with their parents perform better in school.
2. Establish a family routine for homework. Set aside a regular, quiet time and place for students to work and be encouraging.
3. Be involved with your child's schoolParents who are involved with the school have students that succeed better in school.
4. Focus on your child’s progress. By focusing on what your child does well, your child feels more successful.

5. Work with your child. Helping your child with studying spelling words, math facts or preparing for a test, as this makes your child feel more confident with your support.

6. Look over your child’s papers often. When you show an interest in what your child is doing, often the child works harder to succeed.
7. Setting limits helps your child see your priorities. Don’t be afraid to set limits for TV, radio, video games or the like, especially during study time.
 8. Teach your child to be responsible. Your child is a student, so make them responsible for their education, such as putting their own homework in their backpacks.
 9. Make learning important. Find excitement in learning by taking your child on nature walks, going to special events and demonstrating that you want to learn things with them.

 10. Have fun with your child!!

About Mrs. Korsten

I have been working for Oakley District for 12 years. 7 years have been as a substitute and this is my 6th year as a 2nd grade teacher. I love what I do. I have always worked with children. I have been married for 29 years. We have three grown children and 1 granddaughter.  Learning new things is exciting to me and having a safe and welcoming learning environment in the classroom is important to me.  Building relationships to encourage student's confidence is also important to me. Having a partnership between school and home is what gives your children great success. I am confident we can have a successful year.  I am looking forward to what this year has in store.
